Costa Rica

A Jewel in Central America

A country shaped by water

Costa Rica is known for its tropical climate and lush rainforests. The country experiences a significant amount of rainfall throughout the year, especially on the Caribbean coast and in the central mountainous regions. The annual rainfall in Costa Rica ranges from approximately 1,500 to 4,000 millimeters (59 to 157 inches), with the highest precipitation occurring during the wet season, which typically extends from May to November. This is an impressive difference compared to USA (1,500 to 2,500 millimeters (59 to 98 inches) with desertic regions getting as few as 250mm (10 inches)), Germany 500 to 1,500 millimeters (20 to 59 inches) or Spain’s Galicia 1,000 to 1,500 millimeters (39 to 59 inches), or Madrid from 300 to 600 millimeters (12 to 24 inches) per year.

Astonishing biodiversity

Costa Rica also boasts a wide range of ecosystems, including rainforests, cloud forests, dry forests, mangroves, wetlands, coral reefs, and volcanic areas. Each of these ecosystems provides a unique habitat for diverse flora and fauna.Despite its relatively small size, Costa Rica is home to an astonishing variety of plant and animal species. It holds around 5% of the world’s biodiversity, housing an estimated 500,000 to 600,000 different species. Among them: 900 bird species, over 1,500 orchid species, approximately 1,200 butterfly species…

Ahead in sustainability

To protect its remarkable biodiversity, Costa Rica has established an extensive system of protected areas. It has over 30 national parks, as well as numerous wildlife refuges, biological reserves, and private reserves. These protected areas cover around 25% of the country’s land.

To further support the environmental commitment Costa Rica has been relaying every day more on renewable energy sources, with hydroelectric power accounting for a substantial portion of the electricity production. Thanks to this and other energy sources it has achieved notable success in generating clean electricity. According to data from the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), renewable energy accounted for more than 99% of the country’s electricity production in recent years. This demonstrates the country’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
