Arenal Volcano National Park Adventure

Arenal Volcano National Park, located in the northern region of Costa Rica, was established in 1991 to protect the area surrounding the iconic Arenal Volcano. The volcano itself is one of the most well-known in the country due to its once-active status and near-perfect conical shape.

Arenal Volcano remained dormant for centuries until a major and unexpected eruption occurred on July 29, 1968. This eruption destroyed several nearby villages, claimed lives, and significantly reshaped the surrounding landscape. Following the eruption, the volcano entered a period of continuous activity, which lasted until around 2010. During this time, it became a major draw for scientists and tourists alike, who came to witness the glowing lava flows and volcanic activity.

The national park not only protects the volcano but also encompasses a rich ecosystem, including tropical forests, abundant wildlife, and Lake Arenal—an important resource for hydroelectric energy. Today, even though Arenal is considered in a resting phase, the park remains one of Costa Rica’s most visited destinations, offering hiking trails and opportunities to observe a variety of flora and fauna in a stunning natural setting.

This tour offers a complete experience of the park, including a boat ride on the lake and guided hikes through two different sections of the park.

Discover the history, geology, and wildlife of the area along the way with one of our knowledgeable guides.

Frecuently asked questions:

Is this in the official Arenal Volcano National Park?
Yes. You’ll be visiting two trails in two different sections of the Goverment managed National Park facilities.

Is the trail easy to navigate for those with walking difficulties?
Due to the nature of the terrain—which includes uneven steps, loose gravel, and sloped sections—the hike may not be suitable for guests with knee concerns or those who may be affected by strenuous physical activity. Participation is not recommended in such cases.

How large are our excursion groups?
We prefer to keep our groups small—10 to 12 people max—in order to provide the best possible attention to each guest.

What else is around?

The trail is located near Arenal Lake, where you can take a boat ride and rent kayaks or jet skis. Visit El Castillo’s recreation area by the lake where you can also find restaurants and a convenience store. Click here for more information.

Arenal Volcano National Park’s is also right next to Arenal 1968 Trail. A private park within the same protected area with many trails and a restaurant.
