Arenal Volcano 1968 Trail Hike
Early one morning in July 1968, an unassuming green mountain in northern Costa Rica suddenly awoke and turnt into the legendary Arenal Volcano.
If you are visiting the town of La Fortuna, you will be able to get a close up of Arenal’s now ashy gray peak from many different spots. One place of particular interest is the Arenal 1968 Trail. This series of hiking trails brings you through forested areas and across some of the historic lava fields that buried much of the surrounding jungle during the dramatic eruptions of 1968.
This guided hike will be a trip back to explore the history of one of Costa Rica’s most iconic landmarks.

Are the Arenal Volcano National Park tickets included?
While technically this trail is within the National Park, it’s a different, private development. If you want to visit also the National Park public areas, you’ll have to pay for the entrance tickets there.
Is the trail easy to navigate for those with walking difficulties?
Due to the nature of the terrain—which includes uneven steps, loose gravel, and sloped sections—the hike may not be suitable for guests with knee concerns or those who may be affected by strenuous physical activity. Participation is not recommended in such cases. In such circumstances, the Arenal Volcano National Park’s short trail might be a better option.
What else is around?
The trail is located near Arenal Lake, where you can take a boat ride and rent kayaks or jet skis. Visit El Castillo’s recreation area by the lake where you can also find restaurants and a convenience store. Click here for more information.
