The Magic of Sloths in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a haven for sloths, home to both the two-toed and three-toed varieties. These mammals, known for their leisurely pace, spend most of their lives hanging upside down in the rainforest canopy. Despite their slow lifestyle, sloths have adapted remarkably well to their environment, making them a fascinating subject for wildlife enthusiasts.
Interesting Facts About Sloths:
- Slow Metabolism: Sloths have the slowest metabolism of any mammal, allowing them to survive on a low-energy diet of leaves.
- Strong Grip: Their curved claws provide a firm grip, making it nearly impossible for predators to pull them from trees.
- Green Fur: Sloth fur hosts algae, giving them a greenish tint that helps with camouflage in the dense jungle.
La Fortuna: A Wildlife Wonderland
La Fortuna, with its dense rainforests and vibrant ecosystems, is undoubtedly one of the best places to observe sloths in their natural habitat. These adorable, slow-moving mammals are just one highlight of the area’s rich biodiversity. From the playful capuchin monkeys to the dazzling array of tropical birds, every corner of La Fortuna teems with life.

Review Title: Fabulous Half-Day Tour!
We did a safari float, café stop, Fortuna waterfall hike, and local lunch. All along the way, we were exceptionally guided and hosted by Andres, who taught us about everything from local farming to national economic policies that help preserve the natural beauty. We ate fantastically well at both stops. Absolutely wonderful host and a fantastic tour for adults and four teenagers alike. Highly recommend!

Our Cano Negro Tour Was the Best Tour We Did in Costa Rica
We were staying in the La Fortuna area of Costa Rica as part of a three-week holiday. As part of our pre-planned tour of the country, we joined a trip to Cano Negro. We were picked up on time from our hotel and joined 10 other visitors to head north for 1.5 hours to the most northerly reserve in Costa Rica, just 3 miles from the Nicaraguan border.Throughout the journey, our guide Roy was funny, informative, and knowledgeable. On arrival at the reserve, we left the minibus and climbed aboard our boat for a 2-3 hour tour of the park.
Roy, along with the boat captain, both spotted wildlife that we would never have seen otherwise. He was happy to set up his telescope so we could see animals and birds close up and took photos for guests with smartphones.

Erin Premo’s Review ⌈Rating: ★★★★★ Review Date: June 2024⌉
While all of our excursions in La Fortuna were incredible, this one was the absolute best! I was blown away by all that was included in the day. We (my teenage daughter and I) booked rafting on the river and had the benefit of having three guides with us. We were also fortunate enough to see all the creatures we hoped to see on the journey. As a bonus, we even spotted a mommy and baby howler monkeys leaping from one tree to another to cross the river!
We had a delicious snack with cheese, plantains, banana bread, and fresh juice at a nearby soda (cafe). Then we did the waterfall hike, which was beautiful even in the pouring rain, followed by one of the best meals we had all week at a family restaurant where everything was farm-to-table (including the moonshine!).Finally, while the activities themselves were incredible, it was the guides that made it all next-level. The love and gratitude they have for the land were felt in everything they shared with us throughout the day!

Common Questions Answered by Blue Pass Guides
A big part of the guided tour experience is the ability to ask questions and receive detailed answers from experts. Here are some common questions that our guides frequently answer:
- When is the best time to see sloths?
Sloths are usually more active during the early morning and late afternoon. However, because they sleep up to 20 hours a day, spotting them can require patience.
- What do sloths eat?
Sloths primarily eat leaves, twigs, and fruit. Their diet is low in nutrients, which contributes to their slow metabolism.
- How do sloths move?
Sloths move slowly and deliberately to avoid detection by predators. On the ground, they can be surprisingly quick over short distances.
- Are sloths endangered?
While not all species of sloths are endangered, habitat destruction and human encroachment pose significant threats to their populations.
- Can sloths swim?
Yes, sloths are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes underwater.
Enhancing Your Tour Experience
To make the most of your sloth-spotting adventure, here are a few tips:
- Bring Binoculars: Sloths can be hard to spot with the naked eye due to their excellent camouflage.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: The rainforest can be humid and buggy, so light, long-sleeved clothing is recommended.
- Stay Quiet: Sloths are sensitive to noise, so a quiet approach increases your chances of a close encounter.
