Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica, created in 1974 as part of a hydroelectric project. What it became over the following decades is something no engineer planned for: a quiet, scenic stretch of water backed by volcanic hills, bordered by national park forest, and home to more bird and wildlife species than most visitors expect. The kayak rental puts you on that lake without a schedule. You choose how long you stay, where you paddle, and how much time you spend at the floating playground on the way back. It is the most flexible way to be on Lake Arenal.
What Section of Lake Arenal Are You Paddling?
You launch from a point near the Arenal Dam, in a narrow gulf that is naturally sheltered from the wind that can build on the open lake in the afternoon. The calm water makes this section accessible to first-time kayakers and families with children, while still offering enough open space to feel genuinely on the lake rather than a pond. The treeline on one side borders Arenal Volcano National Park, so the habitat is protected. Birds work the shoreline regularly — herons, kingfishers, and cormorants are common — and river otters appear here more often than most people expect. The energy production infrastructure is located well away from this section; you will not see or hear any of it.
Single Kayak or Double Kayak — Which Should You Choose?
Single kayaks give each paddler full control and independent pace. They are the better choice for adults who want to cover ground, explore the shoreline at their own speed, or have a more active experience. Double kayaks are better for partners who want to paddle together, parents with a child in the front seat, or anyone who is newer to kayaking and wants a second set of paddles as backup. Both options are available at the same launch point, and equipment is provided for all rentals. If you want a guide on the water with you rather than going it alone, our
guided Arenal Lake kayaking tour is a structured 2.5-hour experience that follows the same shoreline with a local naturalist leading the group.
What Is the Floating Playground?
Our floating playground is a platform anchored on the lake within paddling distance of the launch point. It has a water slide, a jump tower, and space to swim and sun without returning to shore. It is included in your rental at no extra charge. Families with kids tend to spend the majority of their time here, which works well since the structure is easy to reach and gives younger paddlers a clear destination to work toward. If you want to combine the lake with a national park hike in the same session, the
Arenal Lake Flexi-Pass includes kayak rental alongside a boat ride and self-guided Peninsula Trail hike. If you would prefer to see the lake without any paddling, the
Arenal Lake boat ride departs from the same El Castillo area on a 1-hour guided circuit

Frequently Asked Questions
Can children rent or ride in a kayak on Lake Arenal?
Yes. Children’s life jackets are available. In this self-guided rental, all participants — including children — are entirely under your care. We recommend that all paddlers know how to swim, and that children who are not comfortable swimming wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times and remain in a double kayak with an adult.
How long should I rent the kayak for?
One hour is the minimum and gives you enough time to reach the floating playground and return to shore at a relaxed pace. Two hours is more comfortable if you want to explore the shoreline and spend meaningful time at the playground. Groups with young kids often find 1.5 to 2 hours the right duration.
What if I've never kayaked before?
Kayaking in calm, sheltered water is accessible to most people without any prior experience. Single kayaks require a bit more balance to steer; the double is more forgiving. If you would prefer guidance your first time on the lake, the guided kayak tour is a better starting point — your guide handles navigation and keeps the group together.
What should I bring for the kayak rental?
Sunscreen, water, a change of clothes (you will almost certainly get wet at the floating playground), and a waterproof pouch or dry bag for your phone and valuables. Snacks are a good idea for rentals longer than an hour.
