Stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Arenal puts you at water level with a view most visitors never get — the Arenal Volcano at eye level, the forested hills of the national park on one side, and open water stretching ahead of you. The SUP rental is self-guided, which means you set the pace and direction. The section of lake you launch from is naturally sheltered from the wind that can make open-lake paddleboarding difficult, which is part of why this spot works well for it. You will fall in — expect that and dress accordingly. Once you find your footing, it is genuinely one of the more satisfying things you can do on the water in La Fortuna.
Where Do You Launch the Paddleboard?
You launch near the Arenal Dam, in a narrow, sheltered gulf on the southwestern edge of the lake. The water here is calm and well-protected from the afternoon wind that builds on the open lake — making it a much better environment for SUP than the exposed main body of Lake Arenal. The treeline along one bank borders Arenal Volcano National Park, so the surrounding habitat is protected and wildlife is present. Herons, kingfishers, and cormorants work the shoreline, and the occasional river otter appears near the launch area in the early hours. The energy infrastructure associated with the dam is located well away from this section.
Is Stand-Up Paddleboarding Right for You?
If you have never paddleboarded before, expect a learning curve. Balancing on a SUP in moving water takes practice, and most first-timers spend some time in the lake before they find their footing. That is a normal and actually enjoyable part of the experience for most people — but if falling in repeatedly sounds frustrating rather than fun, the kayak rental is a more forgiving option. For guests who want to cover the lake with a guide rather than on their own, our
guided Arenal Lake kayaking tour runs a structured 2.5-hour route along the national park shoreline with wildlife narration throughout. And for a full day combining the lake with the national park, our
Arenal Lake Flexi-Pass includes a SUP or kayak rental alongside a boat ride and self-guided Peninsula Trail hike — all in one 3.5-hour booking.
What Else Is on the Lake During Your Rental?
Our floating playground is anchored on the lake within paddling distance of the launch point. It has a water slide, a jump tower, and open space to swim and rest — and it is included in your rental at no extra charge. Paddleboarding to the playground and back makes for a natural rental circuit that works well within a 1-hour window. If you want to extend your time on the water afterward with something more relaxed, the
Arenal Lake boat ride departs from the El Castillo pier nearby and covers the lake’s scenery at a comfortable pace with no effort required.
Find Your Balance on Lake Arenal
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior paddleboarding experience to rent a SUP on Lake Arenal?
No prior experience is required. The sheltered section of the lake we use is calm enough to learn on. That said, first-timers should expect to fall in multiple times before finding their balance. If you prefer a more stable on-water experience, the kayak rental is a better fit.
What should I wear for paddleboarding on Lake Arenal?
Wear clothes you are comfortable swimming in — you will get wet. Bring a change of clothes for after. Sunscreen is essential since there is no shade on the open water. A waterproof bag or dry pouch for your phone is strongly recommended.
Can children paddleboard on Lake Arenal?
Older children with swimming experience can participate. Life jackets are provided. Younger or non-swimming children are better suited to the double kayak rental, where they can sit in the front seat with an adult paddling from the back. In all self-guided rentals, guests are fully responsible for their own safety and that of any children in their group.
How long should I rent the paddleboard for?
One hour is the minimum. For first-timers, the first 20 to 30 minutes will involve a lot of falling in and getting back up, so a 1.5-hour rental gives you more actual paddling time once you find your balance. If you want to explore the shoreline as well as visit the floating playground, 2 hours is more comfortable.
