Our Birding Tours

Birdwatching

Quick Overview

  • The Arenal area sits at the intersection of Caribbean lowlands and Cloud Forest highlands, producing exceptional species diversity
  • Three distinct birding habitats within a short distance of each other: rainforest trails, lakeside road, and the lake itself
  • Mistico Park hanging bridges: Over 450 recorded species
  • Lakeside road between the dam and national park: 430 recorded species
  • Lake Arenal wetland zone: 300 recorded species, including jacanas, kingfishers, and anhingas

The Arenal area is exceptional for birdwatching in a way that even experienced birders find surprising. The reason comes down to geography: La Fortuna and Lake Arenal sit at the transition point between the hot, humid Caribbean lowland ecosystem to the north and the cooler Cloud Forest zones of the mountain ranges above. Species that would normally require two separate trips in two completely different habitats can be found within a short drive of each other here. Across the three main birding spots near the lake, eBird records log between 300 and 505 confirmed species sightings. That is a striking number for a relatively contained area, and the combination of the lake, the rainforest trails, and the lakeside road makes for a rewarding full-day birding circuit.

Birdwatching at Mistico Park | Forest Canopy & Hanging Bridges

The Mistico Park hanging bridges offer some of the most reliable birding access in the Arenal area. With 447 confirmed species in eBird as of mid-2022, the trails through the rainforest here expose you to canopy species, understory birds, and everything in between. The bridges themselves — including one that spans 92 meters (300 feet) at a height of 45 meters (148 feet) — give you elevated sightlines into the treetops that ground-level trails cannot. This is the right spot for tanagers, trogons, manakins, and the kind of canopy activity that disappears by midmorning. Arrive early.

Birdwatching Discovering Hike | Right on Arenal Lake

Enjoy unforgettable birdwatching on a hike around Arenal Lake. The lake, now over 40 years old, has developed into a functioning wetland habitat in its own right. The edge zones host jacanas, egrets, and a variety of fishing birds, including kingfishers, cormorants, and anhingas. Forest birds from the surrounding treeline — toucans, crested guans, parrots — come to the shoreline regularly. eBird logs 300 confirmed species for the lake zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of day to go birdwatching near Lake Arenal?

Early morning, from sunrise until about 9:00 or 10:00. Bird activity peaks in the first two to three hours after dawn. The light is better, the birds are feeding, and the trails are quieter. This applies across all three of the main birding habitats near the lake.

A guide is not required, but it helps significantly with identification — especially in the rainforest, where many species are heard before they are seen. Our lake-based tours (kayaking and boat ride) include a guide who is familiar with the birds along the shoreline.

Along and on the lake, expect herons, egrets, jacanas, kingfishers (multiple species), cormorants, anhingas, ospreys, and occasional ducks. From the forested shoreline, toucans, parrots, crested guans, and trogons are regularly reported. River otters, while not birds, are also common sights on the early-morning kayak tour.

Yes, and it works well. The Arenal Lake kayaking tour follows the national park shoreline at a pace slow enough for serious birding. The boat ride covers more ground but at a slightly faster pace. Either trip is appropriate for birders; the kayak tends to be quieter and closer to the shoreline. For birding inside the national park trails with a guide, our

Arenal Volcano National Park Adventure combines a guided hike on the Peninsula Trail with a boat ride across the lake.

We didn't actually do this specific trip, but a very similar one and it was certainly a great day trip. Our guide, Gabriel, was great at spotting wildlife as was the skipper on the boat. Certainly a must do from Arenal if you have the extra day.

Great to be kayaking when I know our rivers at home are still solid! Roger, our guide, is true CR, born under the volcano & had great knowledge of Lago Arenal, and area.

Swimming in the falls was so much fun. The water was cool and deep near the falls. There are other spots to swim that has shallow water that's easier for kids. Lots of steps to get back up, but so worth it. The restaurant at the top was excellent.
