How Blue Pass Promotes Regenerative Tourism in Costa Rica

Regenerative tourism in Costa Rica is more than just a trend. It is a commitment to leaving places better than we found them — for both nature and people. At Blue Pass, this philosophy is not only embraced but actively practiced. With a strong focus on sustainability, community well-being, and nature restoration, Blue Pass has become a leader in promoting meaningful travel experiences.

What Is Regenerative Tourism?

While sustainable tourism aims to minimize the negative impacts of travel, regenerative tourism goes a step further. It is not just about protecting what already exists — it’s about helping damaged ecosystems heal, and about ensuring that local communities grow stronger through tourism.

Costa Rica has long been a global leader in eco-tourism and sustainability. With over 25% of its land protected in national parks and reserves, the country has built its tourism industry around conservation. Travelers come from all over the world not just to see wildlife and lush landscapes, but to be part of a country that values nature as a national treasure.

However, sustainability alone is no longer enough.

As climate change and overtourism threaten even the most protected areas, Costa Rica is shifting toward a regenerative tourism model — one that gives more than it takes. In this vision, tourism becomes a force for healing the environment and uplifting communities.

This is where Blue Pass plays a crucial role. By integrating regenerative practices into every aspect of its operation, the company is not only following Costa Rica’s sustainable legacy — it is helping to shape its future.

From reforestation projects to community partnerships, Blue Pass ensures that each traveler contributes to something greater than themselves.

From Sustainability to Regeneration

While sustainable tourism seeks to reduce negative impacts, regenerative tourism is about going further — about restoring ecosystems, empowering people, and healing the places we love.

Costa Rica, with over 25% of its land protected by national parks and reserves, is a natural leader in this movement. But the rising pressures of tourism demand a new approach — one that leaves destinations better than they were found.

At Blue Pass, this approach isn’t theory. It’s action.

Nature Conservation and Responsible Travel

Our tours are designed to protect, not exploit. Through carefully implemented practices, we ensure that each experience contributes to environmental restoration:

  • Low-impact tours that limit the number of visitors in fragile areas to reduce pressure on ecosystems.

  • Support for reforestation projects, planting trees in previously deforested zones and promoting biodiversity.

By choosing Blue Pass, travelers participate in Costa Rica’s long-standing tradition of environmental stewardship — and help push it forward into a new era.

Supporting Local Communities with Intention

Our commitment goes beyond nature. Regenerative tourism also means uplifting the people who call these destinations home.

Since day one, our operations have relied on local talent and partnerships. Today, this commitment continues through:

  • Hiring local guides, offering authentic interpretations of Costa Rica’s biodiversity and cultural richness.
  • Working with small local producers, integrating organic and locally grown products into the traveler’s experience.

  • Investing in education and training, helping youth and aspiring entrepreneurs develop skills for the sustainable tourism economy.

Experiences That Truly Make a Difference

Blue Pass travelers don’t just observe — they engage. Each experience is curated to transform visitors into contributors.

Some of our signature regenerative experiences include:

  • Educational nature tours, where visitors learn about the fragile balance of ecosystems and the role they can play in conservation.

  • Volunteering opportunities, such as reforestation and wildlife rescue support, offered throughout select tours.

  • Cultural exchanges with Indigenous communities, focused on mutual respect, learning, and supporting the preservation of ancestral traditions. We have tours where visit Maleku´s  villages one of our main indegenous communities.

When you travel with Blue Pass, you become part of something bigger — a movement that’s reshaping tourism in Costa Rica.

We did the Místico Hanging Bridges tour, and our guide Martín was excellent! He had very in-depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna, as well as the complex relationships between them. He had an amazing eye for wildlife, picking out a helmeted basilisk partially hidden on a branch 20 feet away while walking by, in the rain. Martín clearly loves what he does, and that makes him a welcome companion on a nature excursion. Highly recommended!

While all of our excursions in La Fortuna were incredible, this one was the absolute best! I was blown away at all that was included in the day.... we (my teenage daughter and I) booked rafting on the river and had the benefit of having 3 guides with us. We also were fortunate enough to get to see all of the creatures hoped to see on the journey (and as a bonus mommy & baby howler monkeys leaping from one tree to another to cross the river)! We had a delicious snack with cheese, plantains, banana bread and fresh juice at a nearby soda (cafe). Then we did the waterfall hike (which was beautiful even in the pouring rain) followed by one of the best meals that we had all week at a family restaurant where all was farm to table (including the moonshine!). Finally, while the activities themselves were incredible, it was the guides that made it all next-level. The love and gratitude they have for the land is felt in everything that they shared with us throughout the day!

We had Oscar as our guide, his energy was great! You can really tell he loves what he does. This activity has been my favorite rap far! It wasn’t that crowded and it was a Sunday. It was so gorgeous! I had no idea there was zip lining there as well. I would definitely look into that as well, it looked amazing as you zip line across a waterfall in jungle. I am sad. I wasn’t able to do it. The steps aren’t Terrible. My mom, who is 68, stopped every flight on way up and overall took us about 25 min to go up, if that. Oh and you get an authentic lunch with some surprises seeing how they make coffee and trying their sugarcane moonshine 🙂
